Republicans FINALLY defeat Biden! … (3 months too soon)

Paper Straws

It has been a few days since the announcement by US President Joe Biden that he is ending his candidacy to run for a second term as president. The effect of his announcement has turned the November election race upside down. Quite likely, it will be Kamala Harris as the new candidate, and quite likely, the Republicans will not be able to retool in time to defeat her.

What a bold statement that is! How can I be so sure? How can I be so unequivocal?

There are already Democratic voices trying to temper the giddiness and elation of supporters of Kamala Harris who are ecstatic at having been released from the purgatory of frustration and ennui of having Joe Biden as their candidate. The modern Democratic party (since Kennedy’s death), has always been the hand-wringing party, the party that can get it so famously wrong (McGovern, Dukakis, Hillary Clinton), that it’s not unexpected that cooler heads will try to prevail quickly after Harris’s ascension, and piss on everyone’s premature parade, given that there are 3 months to go to the election.

But I have a feeling about this one.

When you look back at the Republican party’s modus videndi of sticking with the disgusting Donald Trump, and the deceit-filled three-chord power-ballad he keeps singing, about how he is being persecuted but is really a great guy — it gives me hope that, this time, Democrats have a reason to over-react.

This time, the energy is not that of over-confidence, but of relief at now having the permission to gush forth about possibly realizing hopes and dreams of victory that they believed were out of reach with Joe Biden as their candidate.

It may very well be that the Republican’s one-trick candidate, who has mobilized the Republican party for the past three-and-a-half years to fight Joe Biden, has been outplayed, and that one trick of bleating about “crooked Joe” won’t work this time.

What the Republican’s seem to not be understanding, however, is that they have succeeded at defeating Joe Biden — three-and-a-half months too soon!

Hurray for the Republicans!

They have succeeded with their plan to defeat the older candidate than Trump, to convince not only their own constituency, but also the Democratic constituency that Joe had to go, and now he has..

Bravo!

Three-and-a-half months too soon.

And now Joe’s gone and Kamala is a hit.

Now they have to deal with Kamalamania. And they have no answer to that, because she is not Joe Biden. Ooops!

If the Republican’s had a leader who could learn a few more chords, and a few other tricks, to widen his base, then I would be a lot more worried about the Democrats changing horses mid-stream. But the Republicans had chosen Donald Trump. And Donald Trump is a problem. He is the one and only problem for the GOP to effectively re-tool and fight Harris, as now the choice isn’t between two “old guys” who were generally unpopular, if for different reasons.

Now, the Republicans are stuck with the wrong guy, who has no other tricks except ones that will not work against a younger, tougher candidate (and a woman), as they are not working now. And he has no other songs to sing than the tired old ones.

Yes, we should be worried, as James Carville says, that the ice picks are coming out. But the ice is quickly melting, and the picks might just turn into (paper) straws.

Yes, you won, GOP!

Now, good luck in November with your hapless felon candidate going up against a sparkly, successful, cut-throat prosecutor, who now has the added experience of having been the Vice President of the United States for three-and-a-half years. I may not be right — and only time will tell, of course. But, good luck, GOP, all the same, because — more than ever — you and your old man are going to need it.
